Dine
Penang is famous for its laksa, nasi kandar, char kuay teow, ore chien
(oyster omelet), pesembor, loh bak, roti jala, and nyonya dishes such as
otak-otak, Enche Kabin, and Curry Kapitan. The best places for laksa
are Balik Pulau, and Ayer Hitam Market. Nasi Kandar shops can be
found at Burma Road, Jalan Dato Keramat, Magazine Road, Pitt
Street, Penang Road and Chowrastalane. Chinese coffee shops serving
chicken rice, bee hoon, prawn noodles, and other are found in Lebuh
Chulia and the surrounding area. Sunshine Square in Gurney Drive and the
Esplanade on Jalan Tun Syed Sheikh
Barakbah
has many hawker stalls. For hawker food in air-conditioned comfort, go
to the food courts in Komtar, Midlands Park Centre and Gurney Drive.
Seafood restaurants are aplenty along Jalan Batu Feringghi and Teluk
Bahang. Down in Chulia Street, there is a quaint food stand that is only
open at night and specialises in Mexican fast food. Delicious with
healthy servings yet good value. They serve tacos, burritos,
quesadillas, nachos, enchiladas, nochos and other Mexican-American
flavours.
Shopping
Penangs Grand Old Lady of shopping complexes is KOMTAR, which is still
a popular place for economic buys. Newer malls include Gurney Plaza,
Island Plaza, Midlands Park Centre, Kompleks Bukit Jambul, and Megamall
Pinang.
For
curious and antiques, go to Lebuh Bishop ad Lebuh Chulia. Indian
goldsmiths are found along Jalan Kapitan Keling. Cane ware and wicker
ware shops are sited along Jalan Pinang. Oriental Jewelery is available
at Lebuh Campbell and Jalan Pinang. Local products such as dried
nutmegs, betel nut, and satay fish are sold at Chowrasta Market, Air
Hitam Market, and Kek Lok Si Temple. Souvenirs are found in abundance at
stalls near the beach resorts. Tanjung Bungah is only ten minutes drive
from the famous Gurney Drive and the nearby complexes of Island Plaza
and Gurney Plaza.

Along Batu Ferringhi further west, numerous shops and hawker stalls line
the road, remaining inconspicuous during the day but attention getting
in the night with their bright lights. They sell T shirts,
