Perangin Waterfalls
The main attraction of Durian Perangin is the attractive 14-tier waterfall
that cascades down from the slopes of nearby Gunung Raya. The unique rock
formation found around this area makes the place suitable for picnics and
relaxing dips in the cool, clear water. Every tier of the waterfall has its
own natural attributes which makes these natural pools unique.
Spectacular during the monsoon season around late September to early
October, when it rains a lot and the water level remains high. The swimming
pools are inviting, with cool water that is guaranteed to wash away the woes
of the weariest traveller and refresh him mind, body and soul.
The Durian Perangin area houses a wide variety of flora and fauna in the
surrounding lowland dipterocarp forest. The main plant species are rengas,
merapoh, periang, melunak, meranti temak, meranti jerit, rattans and palms.
These falls are along a turn-off about fifteen metres north of
Kuah. Three
kilometres along rough dirt track, and a ten minute walk through the forest
will lead you to the foot of the falls. It is advisable to wear comfortable
shoes with a good grip if you are planning a trip here.

The Mausoleum marks the spot where Mahsuri was buried. According to legend
when Mahsuri lay dying after being executed over a false accusation of
adultery, she laid a curse on the island that it would not prosper for seven
generations.

In
the compound there are stalls selling all kinds of souvenirs. There is an
interesting replica of a Kedah traditional wooden house built on stilts. Its
interior if furnished with artefacts and furniture typical of those found
during the Mahsuri era. Also nearby is Mahsuri's Well, that is believed to
contain healing powers.
Location: Padang Hangus, about 12km
