 Pulau
Gemia or Gem Island is a privately owned island, about 800 metres north
off Kapas Island. Gem Island had white sandy beaches, crystal clear
water, beautiful corals and fascinating marine life.
Snorkelling
Snorkelling can be done even without taking the boat out. There are many
things to see near the shore � corals of different shapes, colours and
sizes, sea urchins, swordfishes, butterfly fishes, parrot fishes,
bumphead fishes, crabs, clams and lots of sea cucumbers.
The black tip sharks come close to shore near the rocky end of the beach
to feed on small fishes. Every now and then you can see the fishes
jumping out of the water as the sharks descend upon
 them.
You can also hire a boat to take you further out for snorkelling, or
even scuba diving'
If you have no patience for pottering around, visit the baby greenback
turtles by the jetty. One of the beaches on Gem Island is used as a
turtle hatchery. On the island the green turtle is the most common. But
the Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtle are regular visitors. After
laying, the eggs are collected and transferred by Gem Island staff to an
enclosure on the beach. This protects them from marauding predators such
as monitor lizards, crabs and seabirds.
Stay-in Gemia Island
One such place is Pulau Gemia, a 15- minute boat ride from the Marang
jetty in Terengganu. The one kilometre-long private island houses only
one resort
� Gem Island Resort.
The resort has 52 rooms, including two villas. The villas offer more
privacy, as they are situated at one end of the resort. However, the
chalets are a better stay as they are built on stilts over the water.
Fish can be seen swimming below when the tide is high. During low tide
monitor lizards can be seen looking for its dinner. All rooms has a
magnificent view facing the sea and Pulau Kapas, which is less than 1km
away.
Getting There
There are regular boat services to Pulau Gemia from the jetty in
Marang.
It takes about 15 minutes by speedboat. Overnight parking facilities for
cars are also available in Marang.

War II shipwreck land a 60-year-old Japanese landing craft wreck sits
