Merang
With
its pretty beeches, swaying palms and serene atmosphere, Merang is a place
that you can chill out before proceeding onwards to the Islands. There are
accommodations here to suit all budgets to the medium range Sutera Beach
Resort, with its sea facing rooms, to the pampering at the Malay Styled
Palace resort of the Aryani. Wherever you stay you can be assured of some
amazing sunrise & sunset by the sea when you are at Merang
Nearby
is the fishing village of Kampung Merang, from where one can hire a boat
to go up the Merang River which weaves lazily through mangrove and peat
swamps, and, if you are lucky at dusk, you may see thousands of fireflies
display their glittering light spectacle
Relatively off the beaten track of most visitors to the state, though
easily accessible by road. Locals, however, are well in the know of this
"pristine beach haven" with long stretches of tall coconut palms, golden
sands, gentle surf and emerald-coloured waters.
Marang
Located 15km south of Kuala Terengganu, this once tiny fishing village
with only two rows of wooden houses in the town center, with a shallow
river separating them, has been rapidly developing spurred on especially
by the tourism industry. Located 15 Km to the south of Kuala Terengganu,
it is a favourite stopover for tourists, especially before they jump onto
a boat and head for the islands. This has led to the old houses being
demolished and replaced by modern concrete shop lots, leaving only the
fishing village untouched as yet.

Even so, Marang today remains greenly with lush vegetation and old Malay
village houses. The villagers are still maintaining their simple
traditional life style and belief while the remaining little old fishing
village is still standing among the coconut trees. It is today
acknowledged by many as the most advantageous point along the East Coast
to witness and photograph the most spectacular daily sunrise in the
country. In this respect, a string of budget hotels is located along the
banks of the river and near the estuary offering " the most glorious
sunrise views". Marang Beach is unique in that its broad golden sands form
a remarkable stretch of sand dunes like a wall that slopes dramatically
into the sea, creating an unusual two-tier beach.
During fruit season, market in the town center is a good place to get all
kind of local fruit for the season. Villagers from inner Marang area will
bring their harvest to sell their products in the market every Wednesday
and Saturday, the market also know as pasar minggu (weekly market). If you
happen to be in Marang on Sunday (Marang market) or Friday (Kg Sungai
Kerak), visit the night market that start around 4.00pm end 8.00pm.
Shops line the roads from Marang to K. Terengganu, selling lots of local
produce like cuttlefish, shrimps and fish prepared in a variety ways and
is a favourite with local travellers as gifts to family and friends back
home.
Marang
River Safari
Marang river safari is another good attraction, where the boat will take
you on a cruise along the Marang river, where you can enjoy a picturesque
view of mangrove forest. You also can see animals that live along the
river such birds, monitor lizards, monkeys, crabs etc. The boat trip stop

coconuts sugar, weaving for attap roof and monkey plucking coconuts.

Squid Jigging ~ Candat Sotong
April to June is time for fisherman in Marang to go for squid jigging (Candat
Sotong ). If you do not have seasickness problem, try candat sotong, boat
departs around 7.00pm and reach the jigging point near Kapas Island in
45-60 minutes. Then you may try your luck. The squid are attracted to the
light and tent to cluster around boats where fluorescent lamps are lit. A
jig is a weighted lure with nine hooks arranged in a circular pattern at
one end. The other end is secured to a fishing line. Normally the
fisherman can land 30kg to 40kg squid a night, if the boat anchored at the
right squid shelter or lubuk, it can easily land up to 100kg during a
night of jigging.
