Situated at
the confluence of Sungai Lipis and Sungai Jelai, Kuala Lipis is one of
the earliest settlements in Pahang. In its heydays, it was the
commercial hub and capital of the state. Being the oldest town in Pahang
its heritage is evident in its historical buildings.
Istana Hinggap
Perched on top of a hill, it commands an excellent view of Kuala Lipis
town. This palace of Moorish architecture, built in 1926, was once the
court of royal pomp and splendour. Istana Hinggap still remains a
faithfull servant to the Pahang royal family.
Lipis District Administrative Building
Completed in 1919, it was the administrative centre of Pahang and housed
the offices of the Chief Minister and State Secretary. With the shifting
of the state capital to Kuantan, the building was converted into the
Government Office Complex.
 The
Pahang Club House
Formerly the home of the British Resident appointed to Pahang, it was
built in 1867 and was the first building built in Kuala Lipis. It served
as a temporary residence to Sir Hugh Clifford, Superintendent to Ulu
Pahang. Although the grandeur of its glory days have all but
disappeared, the club retains a handful of loyal members who while their
evenings away in the bar, just down the hall, to the right. There is
also a snooker room and a badminton court, which is frequently used by
several of its 60-some members. Outsiders are welcome for drinks at the
bar and some food. A good time to go would be from 6pm - 8pm when the
regulars turn up for their happy hours. They can whip up some great
stories about their town and are happy to chat with visitors through the
night. Dwindling members and poor funding is a big setback for the club
for it is at an advanced stage of disrepair.
Clifford
School
Formally Anglo Chinese School, it was built by the British in 1913. It
is named after Sir Hugh Clifford, The second British Resident to Pahang.
It has the distinction in that many of the state�s leaders and royalty
were educated here.
Empang Jaleh
This recreational lake offers a track along mountainous jungle trail
Gunung Tahan, the highest peak in peninsular Malaysia. It takes about
two nights to reach the summit. For bird watchers, Bukit Taching is an
ideal bird sanctuary.
The Government Rest House & Museum
Located atop Bukit Residen, it has a collection of bric-a brac,
Malay
weapons and photographs.
Gunung Merapoh
This mountain has trails leading to its peak and the trek takes from 2
to 3 days
