10 Days Bario Highland Mulu

DAY 1

We depart by flight from Miri to the Bario Highlands in the morning. On arrival, transfer to lodge for one night�s accommodation. After a local set lunch at the lodge, we will visit the Ulung Palang and Bario Asal longhouses inhabited by the Kelabit tribe in the Bario Valley. Briefing by our guide of your trek will be held at the lodge prior to dinner. Overnight at the lodge. (L,D)

DAY 2

After breakfast, we pack and get ready to go to Pa� Ukat longhouse and from there will start our trek to Pa�Lungan. Trek time will be 3 hours (10km) over one small hill (Ra�an Bulu� Barit) from Pa�Ukat where we will arrive some time in the late afternoon. Settle in while your guide is preparing dinner. Overnight at Pa�Lungan. (B,L,D)

DAY 3

We wake up early today, have breakfast and visit the Ritoh Monument before we start on our trek to Long Repun. Trek time will be 5-6 hours (14km) involving a fairly strenuous climb over Singkulup Hill with a few river crossings. We will arrive at Long Repun jungle shelter late evening. This shelter is the mid-point journey for us to cross over to Indonesia next day and the site used to be inhabited by the Kelabits (now moved to Pa�Ukat and Pa�Lungan) over 50 years ago during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak. Overnight at the jungle shelter. (B,L,D)

DAY 4

We have an early trek today to cross over to the Indonesian territory. Trek time is around 5 hours (14km) and will cross over one hill (Ra�an Bulu�), which marks the Malaysian/Indonesian boundary, with a stop at the bamboo plantations for lunch. We are now in Indonesia and will stay the night at a local village called Pa�Rupai where the tribe here is call Lun Dayeh and will overnight in the headman�s home. Dinner with the headman�s family. DAY 5

After breakfast, we will continue with our trek to Bakelalan, which will be around 3 hours (10km) of trekking and 1 hour�s walk (3km) across the padi fields to arrive at Bakelalan. The initial trek wills tart at the lowland padi fields and then on to our last hill (Ruan Tung) to return back into Malaysian territory. We will arrive in the Bakelalan Valley around midday and proceed straight to our lodging house in Bakelalan. Lunch at the lodge and you will have this afternoon to rest and relax. In the evening, we will walk around the valley and visit some of the longhouses / homes in Bakelalan. The tribes are Muruts and Lun Bawang. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. (B,L,D)

DAY 6

We have an early breakfast today and visit the coffee/apple plantations in the valley. Our flight at midday from Bakelalan to Lawas will be around 45 minutes where we will be picked up at the airport, have lunch and proceed overland by transport to Limbang. Here we will cross over the Temburong District of Brunei to arrive at the Medamit Jetty for our longboat ride to Rumah Bala, longhouse of the Iban tribe. We will have dinner and overnight in the headman�s section of the longhouse. (B,L,D)

DAY 7

Breakfast at the longhouse and we will continue by longboat to Mentawai to register our entry for Mulu. Continue on longboat and we will start with the trek on the Headhunter�s trail (developed by the Kayan tribe over a century ago). Trek time is between 6 � 7 hours (11.3 km) and is fairly flat with only one major river crossing. Arrive at Camp 5 late afternoon and dinner and overnight at the camp. (B,L,D)

DAY 8

We depart from Camp 5 after breakfast to trek to Kuala Litut (or Berar depending on water level). Trek time is 2-3 hours (8km) to the pick up point where our longboat will take us downriver to Mulu. On the way, lunch will be at the Clearwater rest house. You may want to visit the Wind and Clearwater Caves today (or do so on another day or have a swim in the Clearwater pool. Proceed on longboat downriver and arrive at the Royal Mulu Resort/ Park Chalet for check-in. and overnight resort/park chalet. (B,L)

DAY 9

Free day this morning after breakfast. In the afternoon, we will take the longboat downriver to visit the Penan settlement, Long Iman, where there are some nice arts and crafts made by the tribe. We shall then journey overland to the Mulu National Park to visit the Deer and Lang Caves, which is 3 km comfortable plank walk to the caves. Await exit of the bats on the observation point outside the cave and return to resort/park chalet late evening for overnight. (B,L,D)

DAY 10

Free day till your departure from Mulu for your connecting and onward journey

 NOTE

Maximum per trek journey is 8 persons. This trek requires a fair bit of fitness and endurance. Involves several up hill and downhill treks at heights between 1100 � 1400m and river crossings. Trek distance covered approximately 50 km. In the event of flight cancellation from Bakelalan to Lawas, we will travel overland by 4-wheel drive.

After early breakfast at the lodge, we will go on pick-up truck to Pa�Ukat longhouse and from there will start our trek to Pa�Lungan. Trek time will be 3 hours (10km) over one small hill  (Ra�an Bulu Barit) from Pa�Ukat where we will arrive midday. Rest and relax while your guide and host family of the longhouse are preparing lunch. Before trekking back, we will visit Ritoh Monument and from there trek back to Bario. Arrive late evening to Bario and overnight at the lodge with dinner. (B,L,D)

DAY 3

After a leisure breakfast, some free time till your departure back to Bario in the morning
