Danum Valley Conservation Area (438 sq. km)
This
undisturbed lowland forest is home to the full range of Sabah's
lowland fauna, like the rare Sumatran Rhino, Wild Ox, Elephant,
Orang Utan, Proboscis Monkey and some 275 recorded species of birds.
ITINERARY
DAY 1
Depart
Kota Kinabalu for Lahad Datu by air.
Transfer
to Borneo Rainforest Lodge (90km/ 2 hrs) from Lahad Datu.
After
lunch. go on a guided nature trail walk for 1 1/2 - 2hrs. In the
evening attend
a talk/
video/slide presentation on wildlife/forest ecology.
Night
walk. Overnight Borneo Rainforest Lodge (Lunch/ Dinner)
DAY 2
Early
morning walk before breakfast. Spend the day exploring the
surroundings (guided). Visit a Natural History Observation Trail
with 40m high tree-platform. In the evening go on a spotlighting
drive to view some of the nocturnal animals.
Overnight
Lodge. (Full Board)
DAY 3
A guided
morning walk. Return for lunch before departing to Lahad datu and
for the flight back to Kota Kinabalu. (Breakfast/Lunch)

Designated
as a bird sanctuary in Dept 1996, this 24 hectare remnant patch of
mangrove forest is located just 2 km north-east of K. Kinabalu city
centre.
The
Sanctuary is the only remaining of an extensive mangrove forest that
once existed in much of the area of the coastal city of K. Kinabalu.
The
site is an important refuge and feeding ground for many species of
resident birds, as well as several migratory species from Northern
Asia.

Kinabalu. The Peninsula forms the floodplain for
the Padas River and an extensive network of river channels

overnight trip staying at a seaside lodge in Kuala Penyu will

tour will take you on a wetland cruise along the Klias River onto

tributaries
in search of the proboscis monkeys.

on a late evening firefly cruise to see the mangrove trees lining

Drive overland to Tambunan over the Crocker Range.
Visit the Rafflesia Centre (1,200m
a.s.l).
Lunch at Keningau before continuing to Tenom (46km) for overnight.

2
After breakfast, visit the Agricultural Park (close on Monday) of gardens, tropical fruits, beverages and spices at Lagud
Sebrang.
Board a train to Beaufort via the scenic Padas gorge past tropical lowland rainforest, rubber plantations and native villages.
Return to Kota Kinabalu by coach.
