The
setting is at Gunung Raya, Langkawis tallest mountain and
home to an array of wildlife.
The Langkawi Canopy Adventure enables air trekking from tree
to tree in the midst of one of the world's oldest rainforests.
This is a unique new way to see the canopy level of the
rainforest where many unique and beautiful plants, birds,
butterflies and animals live.
The adventure is broken into seven stages and takes two hours
or more to complete. In addition to air trekking - the term
for swinging across cables connected between trees - it
involves abseiling and walking across a ravine on a single
cable.
The
early part of the route is deigned to help you learn the
basics and this is essential as the final run is the longest
and extends 120 m long and ends on a tree platform built some
30 m high. A training session before starting is provided to
make sure you have the skills required to proceed. The canopy
course has been carefully laid out to allow the most
inexperienced beginner to learn the basics of "air-trekking"
and abseiling, the two main skills needed to complete the
entire course.
After climbing a ladder up a tree you are hooked to your
safety harness and cables. You sit on the edge of the high
platform let yourself go. An odd mixture of fear and
exhilaration makes your flight through the canopy all the more
fun. You glide silently to the next tree, and continue the
process through a series of platforms high above the forest
floor.
There are three flying foxes and you remain 8 to more than 40m
above the forest floor as you glide from tree to tree, most of
them so-called Strangler Figs! Short treks in between require
you to negotiate steep boulders with the aid of a tightrope
also called a postmans walk - (and put all your balancing
and rappelling skills to practice). At the last stop, you whiz
140m into a fig tree before abseiling down its 30-m tall trunk
