Johor  The Southern Gateway

The southern gateway to Malaysia. It has a number of prominent historical buildings. The capital Johor Bahru is linked to Singapore by road and railway. The state offers picturesque scenes of rural kampongs, wildlife sanctuaries, and beautiful islands off the east coast. Johor’s ceramics and handicrafts are some of the most artistic and creative.

Johor possesses a wide range of attractions, from the exciting metropolitan atmosphere of Johor Bahru to the forests of Endau-Rompin Park. The village of Desaru and the remote and beautiful islands in the South China Sea are favored by vacationers seeking a relaxed and natural holiday environment.

The word Johor is taken from the Arabic word, 'Jauhar', which literally means 'Precious Stones'. This illustrates the influence of the early Arab traders who traded spices in Johor. It is one of the most developed states in Malaysia. Transformation of modern Johor took place in the 19th century under the reign of HRH Sultan Abu Bakar.

The capital city and royal seat of Johor is Johor Bahru, formerly Tanjung Puteri. The old state capital is Johor Lama.
